Quick Solutions - Tangled Wires

8/1/2017

A quick and effective solution for tangled and unmanaged cords in the bathroom is a floating box shelf. It gets items off the countertop and hides tangled cords. In the pictures below, the outlet itself was also covered by the shelf, but if this is your only outlet in the space, you may want to consider placing the shelf beside the outlet instead of over it so that you have access to the outlet without removing the shelf.

Basic Instructions
  1. Purchase something to be used as a floating shelf. This can actually be a cube shelf or, as in the pictures above, any small box that either already has holes for the wires or is easy to drill or cut through. It will need to be open on one side, so that the wires can be put inside the box. This box was purchased from Home Goods. (Amazon has a selection of wood planter boxes that would also work.)
  2. Decide on placement. Note that the open side of the box will be against the wall. If you wish to place it over the outlet, you'll only need a hole or holes in the top of the box for the wires. If you place it beside the outlet, you'll need additional holes in the side for the wires to enter the box.
  3. Drill holes or cut notches in the box for the wires. In the pictures above, we used a box cutter to cut notches in the top of the box for the wires to come through.
  4. Hang the shelf and hide the wires. There are a million ways to affix the shelf to the wall. Take into consideration who is using the space and whether there are any small children that may pull the shelf down. In the pictures above, there are small hooks in the wall, and the shelf rests on the hooks. Any number of picture hangers would have worked on a box this size. Plug everything in, using the holes or notches to guide the wires from the outlet to the top of the shelf.
  5. Enjoy!
