In October, we introduced The Sunday Basket® Workshop, and those of our clients with a Sunday Basket® were very excited. Others had no idea what The Sunday Basket® is or why they would possibly need one.
Why We All Need a Sunday Basket®
The Sunday Basket® is the brain-child of Lisa Woodruff, a professional organizer in Cincinnati, Ohio. She created this system years ago when she had a six-month-old baby, a two-year-old toddler, and no time to get anything done. Even her bills were paid late because she simply couldn't find them. They had the money, but the bills simply got lost in the morass of a busy family life. Whether or not you have small children in your home or a large family, I bet you can relate.
My previous system was simple: I paid bills as soon as I received them...unless I was waiting on a paycheck or busy. Then I put them...somewhere...until I was ready. I rarely missed a payment, but it was more by luck than because I had a working system.
And what about other papers that need to be acted on?
Mail that comes in daily. Receipts. Invitations waiting RSVP. Prescriptions to fill. Forms to return. Permission slips. Checks to cash. Articles to read. Recipes to try. Business cards to call. Materials for upcoming vacations. Gift ideas for upcoming birthdays. Coupons. Dry cleaning tickets. Concert tickets. Charity requests.
The Sunday Basket® to the rescue. If you're wondering where to start your organization journey, this is the answer: The Sunday Basket®. [Click here for a list of more things you may find in your Sunday Basket®.]
It’s not magic, and you don’t have to use a basket… any bag or box will do. You see, organization is a way of living, and “being organized” is a way of thinking.
Starting Your Sunday Basket® in 4 Steps
(The four steps are directly sourced from TheSundayBasket.com.)
Step 1 - Find Your Paper.
Step 1 in taking control of your kitchen paper piles is to collect ALL your paper in ONE place. Get a few laundry baskets and FILL them up with ALL the papers… in your kitchen, by your bed, in the car, on the dining room table, and so on.
It really is easier to figure out a system that will work best for you when you can see ALL of your papers in ONE place. So go ahead and get the mail in the bedroom, the magazines by the bathtub, and the coupons by the couch. Put them ALL in the laundry basket.
I’m right here with you… YOU CAN DO THIS!
You need a place for paper to land until you can “deal” with it… ONE place for the whole mix of paper.
Essentially, the Sunday Basket® is EVERY piece of paper in your kitchen that you haven’t processed yet. It’s a BIG holding pile in a pretty basket.
Right now your laundry basket IS your Sunday Basket®. Now, we are going to pull out items and create systems for each kind of paper. But until you can get to creating the system, your papers are SAFE in these baskets. You can hunt and peck to find what you need.
If your “Sunday Basket®” paper collection initially fills a few laundry baskets… You’re doing it right!
When organizing, the pile always seems bigger before it gets organized.
Step 2 – Separating the active papers from
